Mitchell Falls to Gibb River - Day 64, 11/06/2016
Today was a fairly big day in the car, we packed up relatively early to avoid the heat and to make sure we were on the road before 8.30. Soon after leaving the camp ground we stumbled across the grader and he had almost finished grading the track all the way from King Edward River. It was still rough going and I'd hate to imagine how rough it was prior to the grader. We came across a lady in a troopy with a shredded tyre, unfortunately she was unable to undo the wheel nuts and a couple of blokes had stopped to help but they couldn't budge them either and had set off to get a length of pipe to provide some leverage. She assured us that she was OK and we continued on our way.
After almost 2 hours we arrived at the Aboriginal Art sites at King Edward River and stopped to have a look around, we then had some late morning tea and then continued onto Drysdale Station. The Kalumburu road between the Gibb River Road and the Mitchell Falls turn off has been the worst road we have been on so far with regards to corrugations and at times it felt like the car and camper would fall apart around us... I'm glad we are running lowered tyre pressures as it would be horrendous running full bitumen pressures like some of the oldies do.
After a top of fuel and a quick bite to eat at Drysdale we continued on down the Kalumburu Road for another 60 odd kilometers until we got to the free camp on the Gibb River. It was quite a popular spot and arriving later in the afternoon didn't help, we eventually found a suitable spot back from the river and set up. The kids and I then cooled off by having a swim in the river before settling in for dinner, then Saturday night movie night with the kids and off to bed.
Distance Traveled = 234 km
