Birdsville Trip Day 1 Glass House Mountains to Mitchell 573kms

Image
After some last minute packing early this morning Bron, Steve, Anna and I left Glass House and headed west. Our destination and first overnight stop was Mitchell. We had a good run out through Dalby where we stopped for morning tea. Unfortunately on the way out of Dalby I was caught on the wrong side of the law and was done for speeding which was a good start to our trip... We stopped for fuel at Miles and had lunch near Dogwood creek where Steve and Anna were attacked by an over zealous Magpie, very funny when it's not you. After lunch back we were back on the road and on our way to Mitchell. We found the Artesian hot pools and had a soak for 30 minutes or so. Then onto Neil Turner Weir for our first camp of the trip with what seems like hundreds of other campers probably heading to Birdsville too. Trip Distance = 573km Total distance travelled with camper = 11,538km Total number of nights in the camper = 88 Lunch stop @ Miles Killer Magpie Anna

Birdsville Trip Day 2 - Mitchell to Quilpie 394km

Day 2 of what we are referring to as  S.C.A.B (Steve, Cav, Anna and Bron) tours. This morning we woke to a chilly morning of 3.2 degrees and had a quick coffee and breakfast before packing up. We were on the road just after 8 and made our way west to Charlieville where we stopped to refuel and find Steve a pie... After leaving Charlieville the road started to narrow and the traffic dropped right off.  We made good time and arrived at Lake Houdraman just after 1pm. Just before the turnoff we spotted a mob of Emus and stopped to try and get a few photos. After a quick setup we relaxed down by the lake and watched the campers roll in. Steve and I put out the yabby pots but haven't had any luck yet, we'll leave them in over night and see how we go. Trip Distance = 394km Total distance travelled with camper = 11,932km Total number of nights in the camper = 89 Emu's - the first of many Railway near Quilpie Camp @ Lake Houdraman Our view

Cedar Grove - 8th and 9th of August

This trip to Cedar Grove was another quick overnighter and will be our last trip until we head west for the Birdsville races later this month. Bron, Steve and Alana joined us on this trip and they arrived first and selected an nice open spot where we could soak up the sun. After a quick set up we got the fire going so we could cook up our jaffles for lunch. After lunch we took the kids on the short walk through the rainforest and checked out all the damage and flood debris from the last year. After an hour or so of playing down by the creek we returned to camp and stoked up the fire. We had a few light showers in the afternoon that were heavy enough for us to abandon our spots around the fire so we retreated to the campers and played a couple of games of Uno. After dinner we had a few more annoying showers and we were soon all off to bed for the night. Sunday morning was a bit cool but not nearly as cold as some of our recent trips and the sun was out which allowed the campers to

Poverty Creek - 2nd and 3rd of August

We hadn't been to Poverty Creek for a while and winter is the best time to visit in our opinion as you have nice warm days and the mossies and sand flies aren’t bad. We left home around 8.30 and were soon airing down at Whitepatch in preparation for the 7km drive up the inland track. We haven’t had much rain over the last few months and the inland track can be really soft after long dry periods, but we didn't have any trouble. The track was soft and really cut up and rough in patches… most of the time we couldn't get out of second gear but the Triton and camper ploughed through without issue. We arrived at the camp ground to see most of the sites being occupied which was a bit of a surprise as its usually fairly quiet at this time of the year. We had a really quick set up as the awning was in the shop getting repaired and we don’t normally bother for one night either. We had beautiful weather and soon after lunch we were joined by Vaughn and Nat who spent the afternoon
