Mardugal to Maguk - Day 103, 20/07/2016

I was up early again this morning (its my favourite time of day) and enjoyed the sunrise over the billabong that is at the rear of the campground. Once my coffee was finished I returned to camp and the girls were just getting up.

Today was only a short drive to our next destination so we took our time packing up and left the campground just after 10.30. We topped up our fuel and drinking water at Cooinda and then continued onto Maguk. We had heard reports that the track into the campground and falls was very rough, Wiki Camps even had comments from a bloke who referred to himself as a "4wd enthusiast" that this was the worst road in Australia and that comment was from 2 weeks ago... We were sadly disappointed when we found a very average gravel road, there were corrugations in parts but not nearly as bad as some of the roads we have been on.

We soon arrived at the campground and had to drive around a bit to find a suitable site as most of the sites suit walk in campers with tents or swags, I'm glad we were in relatively early as the campground isn't very big and most of the sites were taken by lunch time.

After lunch we made our way to the falls and plunge pool for a swim, the walk in was nice and easy and follows a beautiful crystal clear creek. After about 1km we arrived at the plunge pool and were blown away, this place is awesome. We all enjoyed the water and swam to the falls and found a few rock ledges to jump in from. I had read that you can make your way to the top of the falls and swim in the pools up there, we had to back track a little but we eventually found the unmarked trail and made our way up the steep ridge to the top of the waterfall.

This area is even better than the main plunge pool with a series of deep pools and small waterfalls, there are heaps of high ledges to jump in from and even an underwater cave that you have to swim down about 1.5m under water to swim through with only the sunlight from the end to guide you. We all had a great time and spent almost 2 hours playing in the water, Anna surprised us all by swimming through the cave and Lily did a great job jumping in from the second highest ledge which would have been over 4m high.

We don't have too many photo's of the action but the video when I eventually edit it will have some footage of this spectacular place. Our photo's don't do this place justice and you will really need to come and see it for yourself. Maguk is by far our favourite place in Kakadu and is definitely in our overall top 3 so far on this trip. I would be certain that the people in the "Kakadon't" group haven't bothered coming into see Maguk.
