Rocky Creek War Memorial to Mcleod Creek - Day 134, 20/08/2016
Today was jam packed with activities, after packing up we back tracked a little Yungaburra to see the Curtain Fig which is a huge strangler fig that has grown over several host trees and looks like a big curtain. From here we travelled through Yungaburra to the Avenue of Honour which is a war memorial to the brave men who have served and lost their lives in the war against terror in Afghanistan. Its a beautiful memorial on the shores of Lake Tinaroo and well worth a visit.
From here we drove back through Atherton and stopped in for our first lot of tastings for the day at the Mt Uncle Distillery which was very interesting. They make Vodka, Gin, White and Dark Rum and a very sweet marshmallow liqueur called Sexy Cat, tastings are $4 each or 4 tastings for $10, they also have a little cafe but we didn't have a look as we were making our way to Coffee Works for lunch. We had a great time at Coffee Works and enjoyed a delicious lunch and coffee then spent some time exploring their gift shop and tasting their yummy chocolate. As it turns out they also make chocolate and coffee liqueur which we had to try and enjoyed so much that we bought a bottle.
We then continued north to Mareeba where we topped up wth diesel ($1.19 per liter) and then turned off the highway towards the Golden Drop Mango Winery which was also very interesting. I was surprised at the range of drinks they make with 3 types of wine, port, a sparkling wine and cello's, you can taste all of their offerings and I was surprised at how tasty they were. Anna was particularly fond of their sparkling wine so we grabbed a bottle to take home with us.
From here we continued north through Mt Molloy on towards our free camp for the night at Mcleod Creek. Its a nice small free camp and when we arrived we found one other camper here so we set up as far away as possible to give each other room. The creek is crystal clear and pretty fast flowing and we all enjoyed a refreshing drip and floated downstream in the current. Just after we had finished dinner a group of backpackers arrived and they must be scared of the dark as they camped right on top of us... Luckily they weren't very noisy and we didn't hear much of them as we were listening to the Wallabies getting flogged by the All Blacks on the radio.
Distance Traveled = 171 km
Total distance traveled with camper = 36,835 km
