Lorella Springs - Day 115, 01/08/2016
Lorella Springs has opened up a new fishing camp out on the coast and unlike Rosie Fishing camp you can make your way all the way to the Gulf of Carpentaria. The camp is called Secret Fishing Camp but its certainly not a secret anymore as a lot of people make their way out to have a look. We love our remote camping so we decided to head out and camp for 3 nights at Secret Fishing Camp.
The drive out is approximately 90 km and there are a variety of different routes that you take to get there, when you sign out Rhett and Marie will have a chat to you and show you the routes and attractions along the way using Google Earth. Their local knowledge and information is invaluable and we appreciated them taking the time to talk us through the options.
The drive out wasn't terribly difficult, you do need a high clearance 4wd with low range and it was good to have the car and camper properly offroad travelling through creek crossings, large bull dust holes and soft sand. After a couple of hours we made it to Secret Fishing Camp where a number of sites have been cleared along the river bank, unfortunately this place isn't really a secret anymore and when we arrived all of the river camping spots where occupied. There is camping out on the beach but Rhett advised against due to the sand flies, luckily on our way back through the camp sites a family was packing up and on their way out so we were able to grab their spot.
Rhett does encourage you to push into the bush and create a camp where ever you like but it was hot and we certainly didn't have the right gear to do so. The campsites are remote and you can't see or hear the other campers which is great and the reason why we all come out here, after setting up we chilled in camp. I tried my luck fishing again but still nothing to report....
Distance Traveled = 93 km
