Cumberland Chimney to O'Brien's Creek - Day 132, 18/08/2016
The wind over the last few days has been quite strong and it picked up again this morning so we packed up and hit the road towards Mt Surprise. We met a family at Lorella Springs who had recommended saying at O'Brien's Creek Campground which s about 35km north of Mt Surprise so we made our way there.
The drive in is very spectacular and takes you past an old WW2 airstrip, there is some signage explaining its use. Once we arrived at the campground we checked in with the very friendly and helpful Maureen who directed us to an area that she thought would suit us best. The campground is very large and everyone was well spread out the facilities include flushing toilets and hot showers (donkey boiler) and overlooks the river.
There are Gem fields located about 5km away and we spoke to a number of older couples who had been coming here for years and spend 2 or 3 months each year fossicking. After setting up we chilled in camp for a bit then went for a walk along the river and the girls found a nice little swimming hole to cool off in. The wind was still quite strong and cool which kept Anna and I out of the water. Later in the evening we all enjoyed a nice warm shower and then had dinner and off to bed to get out of the wind.
Distance Traveled = 149 km
