Simpson Desert - Day 7, Birdsville to Rig Road 23/06/2017

This morning we eagerly got ready and completed a few last minute jobs like filling up the water tank and squeezing in another 1.7 litres of diesel to make sure our tanks were full. Just after 9.30 we hit the Birdsville Track south for 200km before turning right onto the start of the Warburton Track. we had lunch at the intersection and I drained some diesel from the aux tank into the main tank and aired down the tyres some more.

After 100km of the Warburton track we turned left onto the start  of the Rig Road and the start of the sand dunes. The most challenging part of this section was keeping an eye out for washouts and holes in clay capping caused by water runoff. We only passed one other group today as we skirted the large dry lakes of the eastern section of the Rig Road and it was nice to be by ourselves in this remote section. By 5pm we were looking for a suitable campsite and we found one after being on the Rig Road for approx. 60km, after a quick setup we settled in for dinner by the fire and a night of star gazing.

Distance Travelled - 360km.
