Cape York - Day 10, Elliot Falls 25/06/2018

This place is spectacular and we are so glad we decided to stay 2 nights so we could really enjoy the falls. I think this is the only camp  ground on the OTT that requires pre booking and we booked months ago which was a bit of a pain as it locked us into arriving and departing on certain dates, but that's the system and at least we knew we were guaranteed a camp spot. When we booked our site, most sites were already booked but looking around there are lots of vacant sites... not sure if people have cancelled at the last minute or just didn't show up.

There are 3 separate areas of falls to explore here, all of them beautiful in their own way. The Saucepan is a great spot and our kids favourite as there are several low ledges to jump in from and the current or flow isn't too strong here.

Elliot Falls is very dramatic to look at but not the best swimming spot for young kids as you either need to jump in off a 2m ledge or somehow scramble down the rock face, due to the volume of water flowing through here the current is quite strong too. I had a ball jumping in here but the climb out reminded me that I'm not as young as I feel.

Twin Falls is also great for kids especially really young ones as the 2 pools below the falls are shallow and the current is gentle. We had a great time exploring all of the falls and it was great to wash off all of the dust and dirt of the OTT.

Just watch out for the Paper Wasps.... Lily and Erin were skirting Elliot Falls and grabbed a branch on a tree disturbing a nest of Wasps... I was about to jump into the water again and all I could hear was this almighty scream from both girls who were being attacked by the swarm. Luckily we were still in the shallow water and Anna and I could get the girls into the water to get away from the wasps and kill the ones stinging them. Anna and I were stung a few times each but the girls had 20+ stings. This brought an end to our swimming for the day and we returned to camp to lick our wounds....
