Alice Springs to Yulara - Day 26, 4/5/2016
We were up early and to make sure we were packed up and on our way before 9am, we refueled in Alice ($1.10 per litre) and headed south to Ayers Rock. We had a big day in the car and it was almost strange driving on tar after 3500 odd kilometers on dirt.
We stopped for morning tea and a stretch of the legs at Stuarts Well and then continue on our way. Our lunch stop was at a rest stop 40 odd kilometers before Curtin Springs and then it was back on the road. The girls got a little excited when we rounded a corner and they saw Mount Conner and all thought it was Ayers Rock and where rather disappointed when I corrected them. We stopped for a quick photo and a pit stop and it wasn't too long before we got to see the real thing.
We checked into the Yulara camping ground, unfortunately we didn't book and all the powered sites bar 1 ridiculously tiny one were taken. The staff must have taken pity on us as they allowed us to camp around the back of a shelter where we could run our power lead to a 240 volt outlet for a reduced rate. If you are coming this way I'd suggest you book if you are after a powered site. After setting up we ventured out to the rock and settled in to watch the sunset. We have a big day planned tomorrow with a sunrise viewing of the rock and then the 10km base walk in the morning followed by one of the shorter walks in the Olga's and then a trip out to the Field of Lights tomorrow evening.
