Overland Australia

We left a little later than usual for this trip as I had to install the new deep cycle batteries into the camper and collect some fire wood. We hit the road shortly after 9 am and made our way north on the Bruce Highway. It wasn't long before we were turning left in Gympie to head out to the Brooyar State forest. Access to the camp ground is via a dirt road that's in good condition. http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/brooyar/camping.html When we arrived we found Bron, Steve and Alana who had arrived a little earlier and set about setting up camp. We spent most of the day relaxing in camp, after lunch Steve and I took the kids for a bush bash through the scrub to climb a little escarpment that we could see from camp. It was a good way to burn off some of the kids energy and the views from the top looking over the valley and camp ground were fantastic. Late in the arvo we got the fire going so we could cook our casserole dinner and settled in for the evening with a few drink...

We set off from home on Friday afternoon after picking the kids up from school, Bribie Island is nice and close and it wasn't long before we were airing down for the short trip up the Northern Access 4wd track to the Poverty Creek camp ground. The track in was in fairly good condition and we had no trouble towing the camper in on the sandy tracks. After a quick set up we got the fire going and were soon joined by our good mate Vaughan, he had recently got himself a camper trailer and this was his first trip away with it. It soon got dark and Anna cooked up a delicious chicken curry and we settled in around the fire for the night. On Saturday morning we were greeted with a beautiful day, after a quick cup of coffee and breakfast we headed down to the passage to do some fishing. I brought my kayak and spent most of the morning out on the water and managed to pick a few nice bream. This trip was another quick overnighter to one of our favourite destinations, we left home just after 9am on Saturday morning and travelled up through Kilcoy to Jimna. It was a beautiful day and the scenery on the way through the ranges to Jimna was spectacular. We arrived at the camp ground and found that there were a few other groups scattered around. The recent cool weather had probably scared most groups off and it was nice to have plenty of space to choose from. We had recently purchased an action camera and I decided to try out some time lapse photography of us setting up the camper... After setting up it was lunch time, so we got the fire going and cooked up some burgers on the fire. It was a cool day so we kept the fire going through the afternoon and didn't stray too far from it. We were meant to go camping at Charlie Morelands camp ground for this weekend but after seeing how full the campground was going to be when I tried to book  (school holidays) we decided to have another weekend at home. On Friday Anna received a picture from her work mate Brendan showing us his camp site at Kenilworth Homestead with an invite to join them. With the weather forecast looking good for the weekend we decided we couldn’t sit at home, so we rang and made a booking. We left home mid-morning on Saturday and it didn’t take long for us to climb over the range through Maleny and before we knew it we were arriving at the homestead. Having never been to Kenilworth Homestead before we didn’t know what to expect, we pulled up at the office to check in and were greeted by the friendly staff. They gave us some quick directions on how to find Brendan and his family down by the river, we were surprised at how large the camp grounds were. Being school holidays there were plenty of...

Winter camping for us usually involves a few trips to Poverty Creek on Bribie Island and this was our destination on this weekend. Bribie is nice and close to home so we took our time getting ready on Saturday morning and by mid-morning we had arrived at our camp site. The Northern Inland track was in fairly good condition thanks to the recent rains, it was a bit lumpy and rutted in sections but nothing too hard just slow going. We booked our usual site in site number 7 as we wanted a site with a fire pit. As it turns out National Parks now allow fires in the group and camper trailer area and have placed a number of fire rings throughout the area which is great for our future visits. After setting up we spent the day enjoying the winter sun, I fished for a bit while the girls climbed trees and enjoyed being outdoors. Friday the 29th of May was a Show Day public holiday and the kids had the day off so Anna and I took the day off from work to make the most of a long weekend. We left home mid morning on Friday and just before lunch we arrived at camp. Later in the afternoon we walked down to Festoon Falls and explored the Bunya forest around camp. Dinner was a beautiful Lamb Curry cooked on top of our version of the Ozpig which was great. On Saturday we left camp to tackle the Barker Creek circuit and the side trip out to Big Falls lookout, it was a great walk through some beautiful forest with some spectacular views. We were so proud of both the girls who completed the 11.5km walk without complaining and well and truly deserved their ice cream. At 3.30 we walked down to the bird feeding area so the girls could feed the King Parrots and the Crimson Rosella's and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
