Birdsville Trip Day 6 - Equine Flu Races
Today the organised activities in Birdsville started with the Equine Flu race events in the main street outside the Birdsville Hotel with a kick off time of 1pm. We relaxed around camp and enjoyed a warm morning before setting off to explore some of the local sites around town.
First stop was the Waddi tree's just north of Birdsville, these trees are unique to this part of the Australia and are up to 1000 years old. Apparently the timber is so hard that it destroys axes and saws and is almost impossible to burn. After a quick look around we returned to Birdsville and had a look at the Artesian Bore and Cooling Ponds that supply Birdsville with its drinking water, the water comes out at 98 degrees... Next stop was the old Royal Hotel ruins for a quick photo and then onto have a look at all of the food and merchandise vendors in town.
Around lunch time the crowd started to gather outside the Birdsville Hotel for the start of the Equine Flu Races, these events were first started in 2007 when the Horse Races had to be cancelled due to Equine flu crisis. Some of the locals and staff from the Hotel created the events to keep the punters entertained and have been a part of the schedule ever since raising money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Birdsville School. The events ran all afternoon and the staff did a great job providing a very entertaining day with plenty of laughs. Just after 2pm Anna and I had a quick look at the Cricket game between Birdsville and Bedourie at the sports ground which is right under the flight path for the airport.
Later in the day we bought our tickets to the Tent Boxing and had a quick look around the empty boxing tent, we planned to watch Friday nights session after a day at the races. Then it was back to camp for dinner and an early night to bed.
Trip Distance = 30km
Total distance travelled with camper = 12,644km
Total number of nights in the camper = 93
