I woke up before sunrise although I don't really think any of us slept much due to the wind. I decided to make the most of it and set up the video camera and tripod on top of a sand dune over looking the camp to the east where the sun was starting to rise. Steve joined me and we watched an awesome sunrise, just a pity the wind was still blowing.
The team swung into pack up mode and we were soon packed up and on the road by 8am. We didn't have long to go today but it was all dirt and we wanted to get to Birdsville and get out of the car. On the way we stopped at Deon Brook lookout which provided a sensational view over the surrounding country. We arrived shortly after lunch and found a spot in the free camping area, most of the good spots with water views had been already claimed.
After setting up we ventured into town for our first look at Birdsville and its attraction's. First stop was the Bakery for a late lunch of Curried Camel and Roo and Ale Pies which were fantastic. Next stop was the Information center to pick up our Race Medallions and some info on the events and schedule over the next 4 or 5 days. We then walked across the road for a beer at the Birdsville Hotel which is something I've been looking forward to for some time. After our beer we checked out Fred Brophy's boxing tent which will be another highlight when it opens on Thursday night.
