Emu Creek, Benarkin State Forest - 10th and 11th October

This trip was a quick overnighter back to the Emu Creek Camping area in the Benarkin State Forest. We have been here a few times before but hadn’t visited for a while as the access road that follows Emu Creek just after Clancy’s camp ground is often wiped out after heavy rain and flooding. The Emu Creek camp ground opened a few months ago and now that the weather was warming up (a previous trip had a morning of -4) we decided to return.

We left home on Saturday morning and made our way out to the camp ground, we arrived just after Bron and Steve and together we agreed on a spot down the end away from the handful of other campers. It was a beautiful sunny day and after a quick set up it was time for some morning tea. Morning tea rolled into lunch and soon after preparing a beautiful lunch Anna had a run in with one of the flexible fibreglass poles and came off second best… She took a nasty blow to the forehead right between her eyes  which resulted in some decent swelling and bruising and after seeing the Doctor on Monday morning was ordered to have a day off work to make sure she fully recovered. Luckily there was no lasting damage and a couple of days of severe headaches and looking like she was a victim of an assault was the worst of it.

In the afternoon the kids, Steve and I went off to explore the very dry creek and see if we could track down some elusive deer. I was convinced we wouldn’t have any luck given the noise we were making but as it turned out we were able to get pretty close to 4 deer, which was great for the kids. Later the afternoon the adults settled in around camp whilst the kids explored the creek until after dark. Dinner was cooked on the Snow Peak fire pit which is fast becoming our favourite piece of camping equipment. After dinner the kids were tucked into bed and the adults enjoyed a few more drinks and the beautiful clear night sky.

Sunday morning breakfast consisted of pancakes on the fire pit. Once they finished eating the kids took off to explore the creek while the adults slowly packed up and soaked up the serenity of being out in the bush. After a late morning tea we finished our pack up and hit the road to head home and catch the last of the Bathurst 1000. It was a short trip but a nice getaway to recharge the batteries after a long week at work.

Trip Distance = 222km
Total distance travelled with camper = 19,579km
Total number of nights in the camper = 134
