Tully Gorge to Wallaman Falls - Day 151, 06/09/2016

We had more showers overnight and the camper was pretty wet this morning, unfortunately the weather wasn't looking good and it was soon raining again. We quickly packed up and hit the road back towards Tully, we drove past the big Gumboot yesterday and we stopped this morning so the girls could have a look. Tully's claim to fame is being Australia's wettest town with the highest average rainfall figure of 4.17m of rain each year, hence the Big Gumboot.

We made our way south to Cardwell and stopped at the Hinchinbrook lookout unfortunately we couldn't see much due to the low cloud covering most of Hinchnbrook Island. We had been told about a nice little swimming hole called Spa Pool located on the Cardwell Forest drive and took a small detour to check it out. The water level was a little low and it was definitely too cold to swim but its a beautiful little spot and would be an awesome place to stop on a warm day.

From here we made our way to Ingham where we topped up with diesel ($1.11 per liter) and then made our way up the range to Wallaman Falls, the road up the range is steep and winding and they recommend against towing caravans. On our way we came around a bend and spotted our first wild Cassowary in the middle of the road, fortunately we were going slow and we were able to stop and take a few photo's. After that bit of excitement we made our way to the campground and selected a spot, most of the camping area is set up for walk in campers with tents but there are a few spots that suit camper trailers and we had the pick of all the spots as we were the only one here. During the afternoon a few other campers arrived and they brought the rain with them...

Just after 3 we went out to the falls to have a look and they are truly spectacular being the largest single drop falls in Australia. Unfortunately the rain had set in and we decided against the walk to the bottom of the falls, on the way back to camp we stopped at the bridge over Stoney creek and we saw heaps of Saw Shelled turtles in the water which the girls loved. Once back at camp we walked the 800m circuit along the creek and being late in the afternoon we were lucky enough to briefly spot a platypus, unfortunately we spooked him and were not able to get any photo's. We then settled in for a rainy evening and a delicious meal of Mongolian Lamb, I reckon Anna could teach the Mongolians a few things....

Distance Traveled = 200 km
Total distance traveled with camper = 37,692 km
Total number of nights in the camper = 283
