Blackdown Tablelands Day 2 - 20th September

We woke up to a beautiful sunny morning and after a quick breakfast and pack up we hit the road towards the Blackdown Tablelands National Park. First order of the day was to find an open service station early on a Sunday morning... I had assumed that Eidsvold would have diesel which it didn't so we arrived in Cracow last night with the fuel light on... Cracow doesn't have fuel either and the closet available diesel was in Theodore. Luckily we arrived in Theodore with what it turns out to be 7 litres of diesel left in the tank, after filling the car and grabbing a couple of coffees we were on our way again. We stopped on the way to collect some firewood for our new Snow Peak fire pit which we were going to use for all of our cooking on this trip.

Our lunch time stop today was Duaringa on the Capricorn Highway where we filled up with diesel again and continued west towards our destination. It wasn't long before we were turning off the highway and we could see the ranges in the distance. The Blackdown Tablelands are over 900m above sea level and the climb up to the camp ground is steep and winding. Fortunately we didn't come across too many vehicles on our way up, the views were spectacular and I was a little disappointed that I had to concentrate on the road.

Once on top of the range the road into the camp ground turns to dirt and its quiet badly rutted and corrugated in spots but nothing the Triton and Modcon couldn't handle. I was really happy with the Stone Stomper, we found that it did a great job of keeping the dust down under the camper which greatly reduced the dust build up on the back of the car. I hadn't considered this as the main reason for getting this stone guard was to keep the stones from peppering the front of the camper and ricochetting back into the car.

We booked camp site 14 as I had read that it was one of the larger sites suited to camper trailers, I have to say I was a little disappointed in the site, it was quite small and didn't really suit our setup. After a bit of creative thinking and use of the winch we were able to get our camper in and set up. After a walk around the camp ground we discovered that sites 9, 10 and 11 would be better suited to our arrangement, anyway we know for next time...

The facilities at Blackdown are basic with Eco toilets and fire pits on offer, there is no water available in the park so you need to bring all of our own. We did fill a jerry can from the creek to use for showering. The National Park does have a number of walks and lookouts as well as a 4WD loop track which we will explore over the next couple of days.

Trip Distance = 307km
Total distance travelled with camper = 18,614km
Total number of nights in the camper = 129
