Crows Nest National Park - 7th to 9th of June
For the Queen’s Birthday long weekend we ventured back out
to Crows Nest National Park (website link)
, it had almost been a year since coming out this way and we were keen to visit
again. We left home around 8am on Saturday morning and commenced the drive out
to Crows Nest via Kilcoy, Esk, Ravensbourne and Hampton, on the way we stopped
for morning tea at the Gus Beutel Lookout in the Ravensbourne National
Park. It was our first visit here and despite not offering any camping
options the park is very beautiful and there are several walks to complete.
After another 20 or so minutes in the car we arrived at the camp ground in Crows Nest national Park, soon after arriving Bron, Steve and Alana arrived and we set about positioning our 2 campers across our 2 sites. The sites here are fairly small and we still had to squeeze Andrea and her kids in, luckily we had booked sites 9 and 10 and these 2 sites were some of the bigger ones. Around lunch time Andrea arrived and so did most of the other campers, being a long weekend it was fully booked. After lunch the kids explored the camp ground, rode their bikes and made friends with some of the other kids camping nearby. Steve and I went for a walk and enjoyed climbing up and down the rocks in the creek bed and getting away from the chaos of camp. Saturday night was BBQ chicken and salads topped off with drinks around the fire.
Sunday morning was an early start for us, our neighbours seem to enjoy waking up at 4am and weren’t real quiet once they were up. The camp sites are really close so this made it seem worse than it was… Anyway once the sun and birds were up we all got out of bed and planned the day’s activities. After breakfast we took the kids on the 4.4km return walk out to the falls and then onto Koonin Lookout. The kids were treated to another close encounter with one of the Brush Tail Wallabies and I was amazed at how still and quiet they could all be. Once back at camp it was time to get the fire going as Jaffles were on the menu for lunch and we needed some decent coals for our camp oven roast Lamb and vegies. Just before 4pm Steve and I lit the Donkey Boiler and once the water was warm we all had showers under the supplied canvas shower bags. After our yummy roast dinner it was the usual drinks and laughs around the camp fire.
Monday morning and another early start thanks to our neighbours (at least they were consistent), after breakfast we started packing up and once done we took the kids for a quick walk down to the creek for one last scramble over the rocks. We had to leave early today to ensure we were home in time for a clean-up and dinner plans, so we said our good byes and hit the road. We were treated to more beautiful weather on this trip even if the mornings and evenings are getting a bit cool. Crows Nest National Park is a beautiful spot with some very nice walks and clean well-kept facilities, the only negative is that the sites are quite small and your close to your neighbours, which has never been a problem for us before as it’s not normally full.
Trip Distance = 336km
Total distance travelled with camper = 10028km
Total number of nights in the camper = 82
